The right size of a naturally gaited or non-gaited horse is 15 hands or less. Check Dr. Deb Bennett's "Principles of Conformation" and she'll explain why it is harder to keep a horse sound once they get too big. They just can't have enough bone to support the extra weight of their own bodies, let alone that of a heavy rider once they get too tall. Well-conformed smaller horses have a greater weight-carrying ability than a similar large horse. And as for gait, the early breeders didn't want tall horses (ones with too much daylight under their bellies) as they knew that smaller horses are naturally better at gaiting due to conformation. I like a horse that will stay sound over many years and miles of trail riding. Breeding for size (or for a pretty head or a certain color) should be secondary to breeding for comfortable gait and soundness. I wouldn't rule out a horse just because he's over 15 hands or so, but I'd make darn sure I measured the circumference of bone and also get an experienced vet's opinion as to the long-term use of the horse. I'm tired of horses that break down too young. It's hard on the horse and it's a real heartbreak for the horse lover. Respectfully yours.
