A curb bit is a bit with shanks along the sides. It looks like a capital H, with the headstall attatched at the top, the crossbar in the mouth, and the reins at the bottom. The curved part of the mouthpiece is called the port. A bit with a high port is more severe than a straight bar. A snaffle bit is any bit with no shanks along the side.Most snaffles have jointed mouthpieces, many curbs do, too. Just relying on the severity of the bit to solve control problems is a wreck in the making. Your horse should be just as responsive on a snaffle as on a curb. Just because it is traditional to ride gaited horses with curb bits doesn't mean they need them, and pain is no way to control a half-ton of horsepower!
