Gaited Horse Discussion Forum[ Home | Contents | Search | Post | Reply | Next | Previous | Up ] Growth Plate Injury, HELPFrom: Kathy CommentsI have a 17 month old tb filly. Noticed a bump on left knee last monday. Leg appeared bowed a little and when she walked, the knee "popped" out slightly. This started sometime between the 3rd of Sept and the 9th. Vet called, diagnosed epiphysitis, and took x-rays. From x-rays he says she has an old compression fracture in knee and inside growth plate has stopped growing, and that has caused the bow. Told only "cure" is to screw the normal growth plate to stop it from growing (says this will stop the bow of the leg). Problem: This girl is going to be HUGE. Not sure where stopping growth of good plate will help if her legs are supposed to grow another couple of feet! This filly has never taken a lame step since I had her - even now, except for the "popping" of the knee, her gait is normal. Vet says fracture is 6 months old. I would have thought she would have been lame when it happened. Can't pinpoint anything in the 9 months I have had her that could have caused an injury. It has only been since a few days afterAug 27 (when I went back to school, and stopped working with her every nite) that she has not played like a wild child in the pasture. When I last walked her on Sep. 3, no knee bump, no knee pop. Prognosis: Without correcting the bow, it will get worse. Knee will be so unstable that if she played wrong on it, she could snap it. If we screw the good growth plate, it will stop growth of entire leg, and if she gets too big, and the leg is way too short, she will not be able to walk. Either way, we could lose her. Have to decide on surgery ASAP or it will no longer be an option. YES I am getting a second oppinion. Seeking info from anyone re: sucesses/failures of treatments to growth plate injuries. Also seeking information from anyone who has or had a horse with a short leg - want to know how they adapted. Whether or not this girl will ever be rideable is not an issue - I am more concerned that she be able to grow up and die old - even if she is just a large dog from now on. I am posting to every discussion board I can find. please E-MAIL me with any response in case I can't find this board again. Thanks.
