We have two quarterhorses, a standardbred, two tennesee walkers, and a jenny mule, and have experimented with, well, you should see our wall of bits,.....it's not the bit....rather than the level of fundamental control. Start with the least severe bit you have in a CONTROLLED area. Remember, the least severe they respond to, the more control you have. Most of our horses can be now ridden bareback with a halter and a lead rope tied to each side. Don't get me wrong, it took some doing, getting across the point that we're the boss. Well worth it though
