Curlies have a fascinating and mysterious heritage, which extends back to at least 161 AD!! They were depicted in Chinese art and statuary at that time and are generally thought to be the descendants of the Lokai horse, bred in the Tadjik region of Russia between Russia and Afghanistan (in the area of the Khyber Pass).

For centuries, these horses have been the means of livelihood for many of the Bashkiri people, providing transportation, clothing, meat and milk. These horses are used for both riding and driving, and with their rugged build and stamina, are able to pull the large Russian sleighs (Troikas) up to 75 miles a day over the snow!

One of the most important breeders of this century has been the Damele family of Nevada. In 1898, Peter Damele and his father were riding the Peter Hanson mountain range in central Nevada when they saw a strange sight: three horses with tight curly rings of hair covering their entire body. From that time on there have always been Curly horses on the Damele range. Our stallion, Crispin, is a handsome example of the best of the Damele breeding program. He is a gentle and intelligent horse, and his mane is a profusion of long black ringlets.
