Hackney The Hackney is one of the most brilliant, high stepping harness horses. They are mainly used for show or competitive driving events. Hackneys originated in England around the early 1800s. Hackneys are related to the American Standardbred by a trotting mare called Blaze. She was related to Messenger, one of the founding sire of Standardbreds. Hackneys can either be a horse or a pony. The hackney horse stands about 15-15.3 hh while the pony does not exceed 14hh. The Hackney horse is on the list of endangered breeds. There are approximately 200 horses in the United States and 2500 World-wide.
