It was established in the 1820’s in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri and Arkansas. It was used for endurance riding over rough terrain. The Missouri Fox Trotter is known for its incredible walk. The horse actually walks in the front and trots in the hindered creating a sliding motion. This sliding motion is very smooth that the rider hardly notices any movement. The Missouri Fox Trotter can maintain this gait for long distances. The Missouri Fox Trotter does not have the high action the Saddlebred and Walkers do and the breed society prohibits artificial aids. The modern Fox Trotter is an all-around pleasure and show horse. Today, there are over 15,000 registered Fox Trotters.
