Gaits: An evenly spaced, four-beat lateral gait (left hind-left front-right hind-right front). With training, gait is performed at three speeds: classic fino (collected, with rapid, short steps), paso corto (relaxed, ground covering), and paso largo (fastest gait with most extended strides). Paso Fino means “fine walk.” Characteristics: 13 to 15.2 hands high (average 14 to 14.2 hands); handsome head; arching neck; compact, muscular body; flowing mane; all colors; spirited attitude (brio); tough feet (many go unshod).
Where Found: Nationwide; especially popular in California and on the East Coast. Uses: Trail riding; endurance riding; shows; exhibitions; parades.
